Has a relative died and you need to know if he or she had life assurance or accident insurance?
If, regrettably, you have recently suffered the loss of a friend or relative, you may be included as a beneficiary on their insurance policy and, therefore, you will be the person the insurer will pay the compensation to. Perhaps you are simply in doubt as to whether the deceased had any insurance with death cover. If in doubt, you can now find out and stop worrying. Insurance companies do not want to save the compensation due just because they don’t know about the death of an Insured; that is why we have collaborated actively with the Administration in the creation of a Register reflecting all insurance policies with death cover.
It is to be known as the Death Cover Insurance Policy Register and you can clarify your doubts as follows:
- Obtain a copy of Form 790 (either from the Ministry of Justice web site or from any of its Territorial Offices), fill it in and pay the corresponding charge at any of the financial institutions collaborating in tax collection.
- Take the form in person (or send in your application by post) to the General Register of Last Wills and Testaments (Plaza de Jacinto Benavente 3, 28012 Madrid) or at any Territorial Office of the Ministry of Justice, together with the Literal Death Certificate of the person for whom you wish to obtain the certification (applications may only be lodged 15 working days after the date of decease).
- Within the maximum term of 7 days, the Register will issue a certificate with the contracts in force and the details of the institutions involved. These certificates can be collected in the same way as they were requested (in person or by post).
- Go to the corresponding insurance institution to find out if you are a beneficiary of that policy and, if so, receive the compensation.
